A few small life changes can make a big difference when it comes to new year’s resolutions!

I know whenever I come back from a holiday feeling fresh and relaxed I say to myself I want to try and maintain the feeling year round…. and low and behold a month back to reality and I’m sucked into the routine and bad habits of the daily grind.

One way to hold onto that holiday spirit is by adorning your home with island-inspired accessories and homewares from another land. Moroccan themed pieces such as printed cushions and painted ceramics are an easy and affordable way to introduce the island life into your suburban or inner city abode. Vibrantly coloured homewares and knick-knacks are an affordable and easily changeable way to brighten things up, whilst patterned items in a minimal colour palette are easily mixed and matched.

Country Road ‘Helst’ cushion, $49.95, True Home diffuser, $16.95, Myer, David and Waddell serving bowl, $14.95, David Jones, D Lux throw, $199, David Jones, Mozi plate, $12.95, Mozi enamel salad servers, $39.95, Mozi handwoven vase, $34.95

Ok, so you’ve put off your new year’s resolutions for the whole month of January (because let’s be honest there are just way too many fun things to do over summer) but now it’s time to get serious. Small things can help encourage big change- a new cookbook to inspire a healthy eating plan, new trainers to get you excited about exercise, a new travel bag to kick off those weekend adventures, or even new skin care items to help take better care of yourself.

Books are a great way to inspire you- from cook books to self help books to biographies they’re a cheap and easy way to give you the kick up the butt you sometimes need to take the first step to change. And whilst it may sound vain I find no better exercise motivator than a fresh pair of kicks or a new gym get up. I always find I’m more motivated to get active when I feel good. One of my best kept secrets are compression tights- they suck everything in and arw proven to help with muscle recovery and blood flow.

Retailers like Cotton On Body specialise in affordable training gear, whilst specialists such as Adidas, lululemon, Nike and Rebel Sport have a great range of high-tech, on-trend offerings.

Selection of Aesop products, David Jones, Country Road boxing tee, $49.95, Lululemon yoga mat, $89, Adidas ‘Tubular Defiant’ shoe, $160, Celsius leather skipping rope, $29.99, Rebel Sport, 2xU compression tights, $144.99, Rebel Sport

Bag from Mozi, shoes from Nine West, small vases from Adairs, jug and stools from Yakedy Yak, books and Cristina Re tea set from David Jones, lilac vase from Salt & Pepper, embroidery clutch from Country Road, makeup travel case from OROTON, candles from kikki.K, straw basket from Wheel & Barrow

There’s no better way to keep the post holiday blues at bay than by indulging in a little lady-like luxury! Feel good things don’t need to cost the earth- it can be as simple as sitting down with a cup of tea from a beautiful cup and saucer, applying an at-home face mask or flicking through a beautiful book. And the best part about it is there are so many end of season bargains around at this time of year there’ll still be a little left over in the kitty to ensure you stick to your new year’s savings scheme!

The Summer Table book, $29.95, kikki.k, Maxwell and Williams tea set, $79.95, House, kikki.k ‘Big Plans’ diary, $44.95, The Body Shop ‘Drops of Youth’ face mask, $49.95, Diptyque ‘Rosaviola’ candle, $92, Mecca, Country Road cosmetic bag, $69.95

Wooden bike, timber bunting, mini lamp, cactus light and crocodile cushion from Adairs Kids, dinosaur toys, cloud cushions, monster bunny and wooden robots from Short Story, fox night light from Typo, watermelon mug from kikki.k, giraffe toy and animal backpacks from David Jones

There’s no reason why the kids should miss out on a fresh start to the year too! Simple things can bring a smile to their face and open them up to new interests and experiences -a new interactive toy or educational book, a fresh coat of brightly coloured paint on a feature wall in their room, some new sports equipment or a food-related item such as a cute bowl/knife/fork set or cooking set to get them excited about food.
Hape walk a long puppy, $39.95, David Jones, Cotton On Kids mountain tops lamp, $24.95,
Spot’s Fun book, $14.95, David Jones, kikki.k study planner, $16.95, Country Road ‘Baxter’ knit cushion, $59.95, Cotton On ‘Sweet Dreams’  light box, $39.95, Lego Duplo playhouse, $29.99
