TIPS FOR CHOOSING KIDS SHOES

1. Finding the right shoe for your child’s age
  • Babies - Infant shoes should be flexible, soft, breathable and comfortable. Their little feet are delicate, the bones made of cartilage at this age.
  • Toddlers - Once your little ones start to stand and walk, their feet play a much more important role. Their shoes should be soft and flexible with non-slip soles to help prevent tumbles.
  • Older kids - When kids are running faster than you, (let’s face it, it happens quickly), they need shoes with good structure, support and durability. They need to be able to wiggle their toes freely and have breathable uppers.
It’s always a good idea to get your child’s feet fitted properly, especially from the age of 5 upwards. An expert can help to identify any issues such as flat feet, then suggest the best shoes for their individual circumstances.

2. Getting the size right
  • Always get your children to try shoes standing up
  • Get them to run, walk, hop and skip to ensure the shoes are comfortable
  • Feet tend to swell throughout the day, even for littlies. Shopping for shoes later in the day (or measuring feet then) is a great idea.
  • Ensure the shoes aren’t too small or too big. Both can cause issues. The back should be snug but not ‘tight’. It’s tempting to buy a few sizes up, so you kids ‘grow into’ their shoes. However, shoes that are too big can cause a range of foot problems. Not to mention causing them to trip!

3. How often should you replace kid’s shoes?
  • Babies - Check the fit every 8-12 weeks
  • Toddlers - Check the fit every 3 months
  • Older kids - Check the fit every 4-5 months

Importantly, you don’t need to spend a fortune to buy good shoes for your kids. But you do need to be careful, considered, and smart when you choose, so your little ones are supported, comfortable and of course… happy!
