From the complexity of intricate landscapes and ecosystems; to those symbiotic relationships between life and the environment; nature provides enormous deposits of beauty, awe and opportunities for discovery and knowledge. Butterflies are a perfect distillation of nature that encapsulate it’s wonder and intricate complexities.
The well-known colourful wings of butterflies are a result of light’s interaction with and passage through fine structures found within the wings, that alters light’s pathway to create colour It is the internal fine structure within their wings that provides a physical obstacle course for light to overcome in its pathway. Light’s passage through these deep structures alters its path and selects for certain colours to become visible, providing the astonishingly vibrant and vivid colours that butterflies are known for.
It is such visceral achievements by nature that enlighten the process of discovery and prompt us to look deeper into natures to understand is majesty and intricacies and to learn from them.
In the case of Bright Future/Sanctuary, the butterflies are created using specialised optical filters that alter light’s passage through them to create colour that is always under constant change. Altering your perspective of the butterflies, alter their colour; a case of technology mimicking nature to try and better capture the beauty of nature.
